Child Patient

The atmosphere at Sagamore Surgery Center is much less intimidating than that in a hospital.  Kids smoothly work through admission, to procedure and through to discharge.

Before Surgery

Sagamore Surgical Center staff will attempt to contact you prior to the day of surgery in order to collect information about your child’s health and medications to shorten your admission process. If you do not have contact with us prior to 3 days of surgery, call 765-474-7838 and ask for Nancy.

It is important that you follow the following instructions:

Solid Food
Clear Liquids (Water, 7-UP)

  • Any special lab tests or x-rays will be arranged by the surgeon. Please have these performed 3-7 days prior to surgery date.
  • Notify your physician if your child develops an infection or illness.
  • Know what medications should and should not be taken
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows plenty of room for postoperative dressings or wraps.
  • Please leave all valuables and jewelry at home.
  • Please remove makeup, hairpins, contact lenses, and jewelry (including body piercing).
  • Younger children are encouraged to bring a favorite toy or blanket they can carry to surgery.

Check-In:

When you arrive at the surgery center we request you check in at the front desk. You will need to bring all of your insurance cards and a photo I. D. card of the parent or guardian. If you are signing as a Guardian please bring a copy of the legal papers for the chart. At this time the papers for surgery at Sagamore Surgical Center will be signed.

Admission:

After you are finished at the front desk a nurse will escort you and up to two people accompanying the patient to the pre-operative area. The nurse will complete the health information interview and prepare your child for surgery. The anesthesiologist will meet with you here to discuss the anesthetic and answer your questions. While your child is in surgery family and friends will wait in the lobby.

After Surgery

• The patient will be taken to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit after a general anesthetic. After waking up, they will be able to join their family in the Postoperative area until ready to be dismissed to go home.

• Specific instructions will be explained by your surgeon and the nurses; written instructions will be sent home with you. We feel that discharge teaching is a very important aspect of care and contributes to a successful recovery after surgery.

• One of our nurses will call you the day after surgery to inquire about your child’s health. DO NOT wait for this call, if your child is having any problems. CALL YOUR DOCTOR OR GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM.
